New Blog Domain

Some of you may have noticed that I’ve moved my blog to it’s own domain. It’s still in the loving arms of WordPress but now enjoys its own name and space. All existing links to the old domain should still work and you should be transferred invisibly to here when you click on them.

But I’m still ironing out some bits and pieces with the move and there may be things that don’t work as planned. If you experience anything that doesn’t seem to be working or works a bit strangely, I’d really appreciate you contacting me to let me know. If I don’t know about it then I can’t fix it.

And giving my readers a good experience when they come to my blog is important to me.

ahh…something I’d LOVE to do. Move to my own domain. I really, really like Wordpress but I’d love a bit more power on the customization end of things! That was how I discovered digi scrapping…trying to figure out html and web design. We’ll have to talk a little more about the domain and just how to go about it and what is involved:) I really like your blog Karen! Keep up the good work!

Thanks a lot Martha. I’m still with Wordpress but now I’m on Wordpress.org not Wordpress.com. I paid $19 for Wordpress to register my blog domain name and then $15 per year to keep it current. I moved to a server that my daughter already had in her name so that didn’t cost me anything. If you don’t have a ‘handy’ server you can rent space from as little as $7.95 per month. Then I chose one of the thousands of Wordpress themes that are available on .org and modified it to suit what I wanted (well my daughter did). Once you’re on your own domain there are no restrictions and you can still get the Wordpress goodies like the stats and Akismet.

Moving the blog to its own space has been an adventure for both of us, but it’s not really that hard, Martha. Probably the hardest part was that the theme we were originally trying to use didn’t support side-bar widgets and we were trying to implement them anyway. Once we switched themes, it was much easier sailing.

Congrats on your new home away from home. I just bought my domain name and am planning on setting it up like you did, but I had to buy server space too. I went through blue host–wordpress’s top pick. You are so lucky to have a daughter who’s a computer geek(thanks Seona–for helping your mom out)! I like the blog template–which one is it? I too have to have my widgets!

Things are looking up in the selfish years! Enjoy planning your trip…

Well Andrea, I’m lucky to have Seona in so many ways. But you’re right, her web programming skills are invaluable (although blogs are not her area of specialisation) But even more importantly, she’s bi-lingual: she speaks both Tech and English.
The template is called Blue Wonder and we’re going through the process of gradually hacking the socks off it to satisfy my needs. But I chose it because it had the fundamental structure that I wanted. Just go to Wordpress Themes and check a selection of options you want in a template and they’ll filter the thousands on offer and just present you with the ones that fit your criteria.

Ah, so this is why I haven’t been getting any of your posts on Bloglines!! I was wondering why I hadn’t seen any from you, then I noticed you have a new domain so I need to change the feed in Bloglines … done now, so I won’t miss any more posts!! Like the new look.

Thanks Hannah. I’ve had some trials and tribulations in this exercise but hopefully they will all be sorted out by the end of the week.
