How can I improve Scraps of Mind?

Welcome to Scraps of Mind. I'm delighted to see you. Why not check out the site, and if you like what you see, subscribe to my RSS feed and get daily updates delivered to you. If you're not sure what the RSS thing is, then check out this 'RSS made easy' post. Thanks for visiting and I look forward to seeing more of you.

Scraps of Mind has been growing steadily over the last few months, and the reason for that is because you choose to read it. So first and foremost I’d like to thank you for your fabulous support.

And this seems to be a good time to ask you what you like about this blog and what you would like to see different or improved. I was going to put a formal survey form in this post but then I thought, those things usually irritate me when I have to fill them out so why should I inflict one on you.

So here are some of my thoughts on stuff you might like to give me feedback on and you can cut and paste the list (or part) into a Comment. Or just write what you feel without the list.

  • The look and feel of the the blog
    • How do you find navigating around the blog? Is it easy to find the things you’re looking for?
    • Is the template design easy on your eye? Does the layout of it work for you?
  • Content
    • Is the current mix of topics what you would like to see going forward, or would you like to see some left out and others included? Here is a list of the current topic groups, let me know which you would like to continue and which you are not really interested in reading any more on:
      • General scrapbooking articles (traditional, digital and hybrid)
      • Digital scrapbooking articles
      • Traditional scrapbooking articles
      • Scrapbooking tips and techniques
      • Scrapbook freebie links
      • Quotes
      • Other arts and craft related articles
      • Blog improvement articles
      • Antiques and collectables series
      • Occasional events in my life (Opera, Ballet, Festivals etc)
      • Other types of articles that you would like to read on Scraps of Mind
  • What do you like most about Scraps of Mind? What do you like least about it?
  • Other ideas and feedback

I would really appreciate your taking the time to give me this feedback, and whilst I can’t guarantee to implement everything everyone suggests I can promise you that it will all be taken on board and factored into the next phase of Scraps of Mind.

So here’s your chance to have your say in how this blog develops. Feel free to either leave your feedback in the comments section below or, if you prefer you can send them to me privately through my email address on my About Page.

  2. My personal answers to your questions (I hope it helps, I enjoy reading your blog a lot)

The look and feel of the the blog: I’ve always been told that yellow is not a right choice as a website/blog background and should be used for ads, warning and things like that, not as a main color, plus in many cultures, yellow has a negative signification. The main column is too wide, the eyes have to go a long way in between the paragraphs. Categories and recent posts are not easy to find. That’s it for the negative critics!!! I love the content of your blog:

Do I want to read about:

    * General scrapbooking articles (traditional, digital and hybrid) — YEEESSSss
    * Digital scrapbooking articles — OH YEEESSSSS
    * Traditional scrapbooking articles — not really but it is useful to learn about it for digiscrappers who never tried it before
    * Scrapbooking tips and techniques — Yes, very very much!!
    * Scrapbook freebie links — not really, as there is plenty of those blogs already and your blog is different and I think you should carry on being different and carry on making the content interesting
    * Quotes — it’s fun
    * Other arts and craft related articles — personally no
    * Blog improvement articles — OH YES YES YES!!!
    * Antiques and collectables series — personally no
    * Occasional events in my life (Opera, Ballet, Festivals etc) — It’s always good to know a bit more about the bloggers we read, what they like to do etc.
    * Other types of articles that you would like to read on Scraps of Mind — for me your topics are okay as they are, more tutorials like the one you did for the scrapbook layout makeover would be appreciated

What I like most is that your articles are really clear and straight to the point.
What I like least is the graphic and template that don’t make it easy to read and naviguate.

  3. Look and Feel: I’m still new to blogging so I haven’t really got into the look and feel of things. I hate to say this but I really don’t notice colors and stuff much and I’m much more into content. So…
Content: I really like the content you have in your blog. You are so full of information and ideas and suggestions. I use you as a resource and when I need inspiration I open up your blog and read earlier entries. I like that you don’t come across as a “know it all” and “My way is the only way” and that you open it up for suggestions and ideas and discussion. The discussions that you begin really make me think and decide on my own.
Like Most/Least: I like your banner which is bright and clear and colorful. Least: nothing, it is all great.
Other: We are called Turtles because we are SLOW hikers! especially in all this heat.

  4. I enjoy all aspects of your blog Karen because the content is so diverse and I am interested in all of it! I often come to read but don’t always leave a comment though. I would suggest a different background colour - I don’t know why but on my computer the yellow makes me squint a little when I am reading.

  5. Thanks so much for the feedback ladies. I really appreciate your time and thought in doing this.

  6. I love the content. Am always checking to see when you have updated, LOL. I have you on RSS and sharp reader so I definitely don’t miss.

Least liked… Well you asked for it. Two sidebars. I feel like having one on each side of the content competes with it and my eyes are being pulled in three directions. Just my two cents, but what do I know anyway, LOL.

  7. Well Tink, you know just as much as everybody else and I very much appreciate your feedback.

  8. Well, since I’m a regular visitor, it must be clear that I love visiting your blog. The yellow background is perfect for me! (so many people, so many opinions, lol) on my computer screen it’s a soft yellow which is soothing for the eye and it makes the font stand out in a pleasant way. Like Tink, I prefer one sidebar, but that is also a matter of personal taste.
Although I enjoy all the topics you write about, I check your blog immediately when I see (RSS) a topic with either educational or newsworthy contents. I LOVE quotes, don’t get me wrong, but when RSS says “Words to live by” I tend to skip a day and read two posts the next day. I always read them, but it isn’t a reason to stop by immediately though, KWIM?
Please keep writing about the personal things, I feel more connected when I discover things about the “woman behind the blog” rather than just reading post after post with tutorials or tips :)

  10. Hi Karen!

I really enjoy your blog! I have no problem with the three columns (wish I could figure out how to do that on MY blog!) and your color is so different from any other blog/website I have been to that I find it refreshing! It has a fun and inviting banner as well. I am also able to find what I want by exploring either your Latest Articles section or your Categories.

I enjoy the content on your blog and that is what keeps me coming back! Scrapbooking articles of any kind appeal to me but if you are discussing an article that relies on paper scrapbooking techniques, you may want to make the connection between that and digital alternatives.

Hybrid articles are fine, though I will remain a digital scrapper! However, I do the odd card/craft where I design and then print out my digital stuff!

Tips and techniques are ALWAYS appreciated and I also enjoy reading about blog improvement techniques.

I enjoy hearing about tidbits of your own life because it makes the connection more personal. (I wish I could do that easily on my own blog!) Keep on doing what you are doing - great stuff!

  11. I truly like your Scrapbooking tips and techniques but also General scrapbooking articles . sometime I have problems with the images, because they cover the text, or now, that the line is longer then my screen, and I can not see what I type:) (maybe is my computer fault), but for the rest I love your blog!

  14. Hi Karen, you are doing great things will your blog and the content is excellent! I would just like to see it look a little more artsy.. visually it is quite businesslike looking, particularly for the subject matter. Just my opinion :D
