Stitching for the Sewing Challenged

For some time now the singer sewing machine and its friends has have been a trusty weapon in the paper scrapbooker’s arsenal.

Stitching has become a feature of many a scrapbook layout.

whowasbringingthepotatosala.jpgNeed some ribbon or lace on your layout? Plug in the sewing machine, whizz up and down and it’s done.

And what to do to make your doodles really pop? Yep, reach for the trusty singer sewing machine.

As a sewing challenged individual, I’ve looked with awe at these layouts in scrapbook magazines and on blogs. I can barely sew on a button!

I really like the whole sewing look. It’s part of that tactile vibe that adds dimension to scrapbook layouts. But I also know what I’m like with a sewing machine. And so I’ve avoided trying to create any layouts that involve thread or needles.

But I’ve just got these great digital stitches from Scrap Girls and I just had to satisfy my need for a ‘stitchy’ scrapbook layout. It may not have the tactile thing of real sewn stitches but I’m really digging the look. By the way, all the other elements in the layout came from Valerie Randall’s Altered State Kit. Some gorgeous papers in that.

Now I’m in love with digital stitches. Move over singer sewing machine, it’s time for some virtual sewing.

So tell me what you think. Do you like stitching on your scrapbook layouts? Do you use it on your paper scrapbook layouts? And if you’re a digital scrapbooker, have you tried using digital stitches yet?

I love the look of stitching on layouts. I don’t own a sewing machine, but sometimes I am seriously tempted to go and buy one – only for scrapbooking, you know!
I have used rub-on stitches a few times which is similar I guess to the virtual stitches you are talking about.
I’ve also done a bit of hand-sewing and like the look – just not the time it takes!

Here’s a thought Hannah. Why don’t you download some digital stitches and then print them onto transparencies and make your own rub-ons that you can use over and over again. Instructions for how to do this here.

I love stitches on digital layouts. After trying long and hard I finally managed to create some that really had the look I wanted, dropshadow and all (hurray for PSP X2). It’s nothing fancy, just a staight line, but I’m happy with it. I love the wavy stitched line you have in this layout, that’ll be my next project :)

Yes, Karen, I love stitching in my scrapbook, I did some just last week. My other hobby is quilt, so you can imagine I love to combine my two hobbies!

And I have seen your beautiful sewing work Corina. If I could sew like that i wouldn’t need to rely on digital stitching.

That’s what I love about digital, you can add anything you fancy to your layouts even as in this case, you don’t know how to sew. You can add elements than in a traditional layout would be impossible or made preserving the layout impossible like jewels or big buttons or leaves and flowers and other natural elements. You’ll never have to worry about how to keep that kind of layouts or whether they will damage the layout in the future so long as you take care of the paper you print on and the ink you use. :D
It’s fantastic the kind of things and the freedom digital gives you to do things. :)

Best wishes. :O)

I have to agree. I find I’m a lot more adventurous with my digital scrapbook layouts than with my paper ones. It’s so easy to try new things.
