And as the Olympics get underway and we are carried away on a tide of sport, let’s get going with this sporting edition of the newsletter.

Get in Touch with your Inner Sportsperson

Let me start off by saying that I am in no way a sports oriented person.

Oh I understand enough to be able to nod wisely at the appropriate times in a social conversation and even to contribute to the debate (there’s always a debate when it’s about sports) without actually knowing what I’m talking about. And I have happily gone along to a number of sporting events as a guest of various corporate colleagues from time to time. I confess, my idea of a good sporting event is one where there are comfortable seats, a good meal and drinks.

I think I’ve painted the picture pretty clearly. A sports-interested person I am not.

But when the Olympics is on then it’s a whole other ball game (so to speak).

Suddenly I’m riveted to the television as I enthusiastically follow the dressage, the shooting, the weightlifting and a whole range of sports that I never even think about at any other time.

I’m not sure what it is about the Olympics that does this. And I know I’m not alone. Maybe it’s the sheer diversity of events, or maybe it’s the honor and prestige that’s attached to the Olympics that has me glued to the screen as I follow the diving, table tennis and judo, even when Australia is not a big chance for a medal. And the swimming and athletics events are simply magnets. I suddenly become a knowledgeable expert in all these sports as I critique the style, tactics and techniques of the athletes.

Whatever it is, The Olympics has an allure that no other sporting event in the world has. Despite all the controversy and hoo-ha that surrounds it these days we all love to watch and cheer (even if it’s for athletes from other countries than our own).

And wasn’t that guy running around the stadium in the air pretty darn speccy?

Ya gotta love the Olympics.

Highlights from Scraps of Mind

The big news in the world of Scraps of Mind it the new magazine format we’ve changed too. I’m pretty excited about this direction. If you haven’t seen the new look click over to Scraps of Mind and check it out. I’d love to hear what you think.

The scrapbooking question of the week was ‘are we challenged out?‘ where I asked whether you thought that there were too many scrapbook challenges going on and whether you were a challenge participator. There were some great responses to this, from both sides of the fence. So if you didn’t catch the article I recommend you click over and have a read.

I experimanted with a Mid-Week Mashup of different snippets of interest from the week. I think one of the most interesting was that Yaro Starak’s Blog Mastermind has been set up in Australian dollars rather than US$, which gives all the US students an instant discount in the currency conversion. Check out the article to see what I mean.

And Wildheart was back on form last week with some great new textures for you in her weekly column.
