Hi, and welcome to this edition of the Scraps of Mind Word Art Newsletter.

Spring has really sprung in Melbourne and it’s a joy to be writing this newsletter to the tune of the birds chirping happily outside the window. I’m feeling very mellow and all’s right with the world.

One Day in September

The last Saturday in September is the Australian Football League Grand Final Day!

Arguably one of the most important events on the Australian Sporting Calendar (sorry Sydney, I think there’s more interest in the AFL GF than in your NRL match). And it is the sacred duty of Melburnians to reserve this afternoon to watch the match. Roads are deserted, shopping centres echo.

So Allan and I, accompanied by a bottle of champagne and a punnet of strawberries, headed off to the banks of the Yarra to enjoy a peaceful, tranquil afternoon with the trannie tuned into some classical music and nary a football in sight.

It was an idyllic Spring day. We had the place to ourselves. The sun was filtering through the tree branches. The river was pouring out of the Evelyn Tunnel and over the rapids to slow to a gentle crawl on its meandering way to Port Phillip Bay. The birds were chattering away and making sorties to our blanket to check out what food might be in the offing and the dragonflies were skimming across the top of the water.

Perfect! It was the best Grand Final I never watched.

Oh, and Hawthorn won over the favourites, Geelong.
