He walked down the street.

He walked down the street in the crisp autumn twilight. It was a jerky, nervous walk; as if he wasn’t used to the exercise.

His head was covered with an old hessian sack, tied roughly around the neck with a piece of twine. He wore a shabby old tweed jacket that had seen better days over a pair of faded and patched blue dungarees and an old blue and gray checked shirt.

A woman dressed as a witch came out of a garden gate as he passed. She was holding a toddler dressed as a frog and following a young pirate. The young pirate pointed and said, “Hey, cool costume mister.” He nodded down at the boy, his mouth stretched in a grimace of a smile.

A little further along a door opened and laughing people spilled noisily out onto the front porch.

“Hey man, come on in and join the party.” called a gray bearded wizard.

He turned and walked up the path towards the house. People were milling around everywhere. Patting him on the back and telling him how authentic his costume looked. Someone pushed a bottle of beer into his hand. He nodded and gave his stiff smile again, moving through the party. Joining this group for a few minutes and then moving on to another. Nodding and lifting his bottle in toast to the other party-goers.

Finally he found himself back at the front door again. He lifted his bottle in salute, put it on the hall table and, with a wave of his hand, he was out on the porch and heading back to the street. No one noticed that the bottle was still full.

On he walked. Twice more he was hailed and joined in the season festivities. Each time was the same. He moved silently through the party saluting everyone with his bottle before quietly leaving, his drink untouched.

Finally, as the night’s festivities began to wind down, he turned his face towards the open fields at the edge of town. And began his jerky walk towards them.

The path became dark as he left the street lights behind. But, jerky though his steps were, his feet never faltered.

Eventually he reached the spot he had been aiming for. There was a pole sticking up out of the ground in the middle of a field. He took off his jacket, and with his back against the pole, put it on again with the pole inside. Then he leaned back against the pole and sighed.

It was a lonely job, being a scarecrow. Oh sure, he could walk the fields at night watching the animals. But he needed more.

Halloween was his night. The one night of the year when he could go into the town and mix with people.

The one night of the year when he fitted in.
