Use up your older scrap supplies by mixing them with your new purchases.

You always end up with left over letters from alpha sets and rub-ons. Mix and match the letters on a layout for a funky effect.

Colour is cool but sometimes black and white can be so much more.

Convert some of your colour photos to black and which and use them in your scrapbook layouts. You can mix and match them with your colour photos in a single layout for a great contrast.

Make your focal photo a large black and white one and have some small supporting photos in colour; perhaps as a collage in one corner.

It’s a great look so if you haven’t given it a try, why not base your next scrapbook layout on a black and white photo.

Keep a camera in your purse/handbag. And check that the batteries are good at the start of each week. These days most of us have a small digital camera that we can easily carry around with us. And the last thing you need is to be caught short at that perfect scrapbookable moment.

And by the way, don’t rely on your phone camera. The photos that cell phones take are fine for sending to your friend through your text function. And they can also be fine to view on the computer monitor But they’re not likely to be much good for scrapbooking as the resolution will probably be too low for printing or for working with on a digital layout.

Don’t just photograph the major events in your family’s life.

Try taking some photos of some of your every day family traditions. Things like the ‘back to school’ shopping trip your do at the same time each year. Or even the all important daily routine of that first cup of coffee without which your day can’t begin properly.

These are the things that make up the fabric of your family’s life and although they may not seem particularly memorable now, they’re exacly the sort of things that you and your family will remember fondly when they look back to these times.

So capture these moments and scrapbook them as part of your family heritage. And make sure you explain what the tradition is all about in your journaling. This is one time when a picture may not tell a thousand words.

Here’s another photo tip.

When your child has a special milestone such as a first haircut,

take a ‘before’ photo then take some during the event

and finally take an ‘after’ photo.

Three photos of the stages of the event will make a great scrapbooking story for your layout.

Why not try variations on traditional group photo of the family.

If you’re having the whole family over for an occasion, try posing them in several smaller groups rather than just in one large group.

You can then overlap the photos on your scrapbook layout for an interesting approach to the family group shot.

To give your brads (real life ones, not digital ones) a vintage or grungy look, hold the brad by its prongs and give it a rub with a piece of sand paper or an emery board.

Scratch the top a bit so it doesn’t look all fresh painted an new and rub a bit harder around the edges where you would expect to see the paint having worn off.
