Hi Everyone, and welcome to this week’s edition of the Scraps of Mind Weekly Word Art Newsletter.

Thanks for all your good wishes and the virtual massages for my neck. Between your kind thoughts, your massages and, I think, a repositioning of my computer monitor, my neck is very much improved.

ANZAC Day

April 25 is a special day of commemoration in Australia and New Zealand. It marks the day when we remember the Battle of Gallipoli from World War One, which lasted from 25 April 1915 to 9 January 1916.

This was the first major campaign undertaken by the newly formed Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). Due to planning delays and other issues the element of surprise needed for the invasion of this beach head to be successful was lost and as a result, the ANZACs suffered appalling losses right from the very beginning of the battle. Out of the first 200 men to dismbark, only 21 made it onto the beach of Gallipoli.

99,893 men from both the Allied and the Turkish forces were killed over the 8 months of the campaign with a further 237,037 wounded. And at the end of the day, the status quo pretty much remained unchanged.

But Gallipoli became the ANZAC rallying point. And its commemoration each year represents our homage to all those who have and do put themselves in harms way to defend our national point of view.

I think ANZAC Day is more significant to Australians (I can’t speak for the Kiwis on this) than any other day on our calendar, including Australia Day. Seeing all the people who turn out to watch our veterans proudly march to the Memorial Monuments in towns and suburbs all over the country is a testament to our esteem. And watching the grandchildren and great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren of Diggers past proudly marching wearing their Grandpa’s medals is a sight worthy of the tear to the eye that it brings.

Highlights from Scraps of Mind

In response to a request from my sister I wrote an article to show you different ways you can use the word art you are collecting from this Newsletter. I hope that it gave you some ideas and you can get even more use out of your word art collection.

And using the classic ‘desert island’ theme I challenged you to nominate the one scrapbook embellishment you just can’t live without.

How about Spring Cleaning your Digital Scrapbooking Stash? You’ll be amazed at how much hard drive space you can free up and how much better your computer will run.
